The national flag symbolizes the unity of the United States and has become a focal point of American patriotism. Millions of students recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag each day and the lyrics of our national anthem often mention the flag. Americans rely on the colors and shapes of the flag to take positions in debates about their country and its place in the world. Artists and activists use flag imagery to express their concerns and provoke dialogue.URL :https://ultimateflags.com/collections/patriotic/
This painting by John Campbell shows a field of blue with red stripes and cracks in the white stars that resemble badges—an allusion to the lynchings of black people that occurred during the summer of 2014. At the time, Campbell reposted this image on his commercial Facebook page as a reaction to the killings of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, and other unarmed black people.
Celebrate Freedom: Patriotic Flags Collection
In 1777 Congress passed the first Flag Act, which specified the size, design, and arrangement of stars and stripes. The current flag has thirteen horizontal stripes—seven red alternating with six white—and fifty stars, which represent the original 13 colonies and the addition of each state to the Union. The colors of the flag also have symbolic meanings: white signifies purity and innocence, red represents hardiness and valor, and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance and justice.
NMAAHC staff and volunteers collect torn, faded or otherwise damaged American flags from all over the Coachella Valley. These are then exchanged for new 3-foot by 5-foot flags at the Veterans Success Center at CSUSB Palm Desert, while supplies last. We ask for donations of new American flags in order to increase our capacity for this program.
